He played his first game for Arsenal in more than a year in the 3-1 win over Cologne in the Europa League in September and made his first Premier League appearance of the season in the win over Everton last month. "That is not the way we are playing".

Paul Merson believes that Jack Wilshere is deserving of a place in the England squad, but admits that he will likely have to leave Arsenal to kickstart his career.

England boss Gareth Southgate has also warned the midfielder that he will not earn an global recall unless he is playing regularly, meaning a likely Emirates Stadium exit in the eyes of Merson.

"Jack played as a number 10 all of last season on loan at Bournemouth", Southgate was quoted as saying by Sky Sports on 9 November. When we have played with a 10, we have had Dele [Alli] and [Adam] Lallana. Southgate holds him in high esteem but his slide down the Arsenal pecking order and the difference of opinion over his deployment means he may need a new club, a new position or both in January.

"I really like Jack Wilshere as a player", he said.

"I don't think Jack is a 10".

"I like him very much, but why his name should be being talked about for Crystal Palace, I don't know".

Wilshere has been overlooked for a heavily depleted squad due to a lack of game time at Arsenal and Southgate's view that he has not been used in his best position in recent seasons.

"I've been here 10 years, I love this club and feel like I have a special relationship with the fans", Wilshere told Standard Sport.

"He needs to get on the ball and play football and be in a team that really are going to have a lot more of the ball than not".

Wilshere: "I want to be playing for my country".

"At the moment I'm concentrating on getting into the Premier League team".
