It is not yet known how many people have been displaced by the fire, and the initial cause of the inferno has not been reported.

The city fire department said the wind was a problem, and that is why the fire spread to other floors of the 42-unit apartment building.

A tenant in an upper Manhattan apartment building that went up in flames was missing and feared to be in the burned out building, firefighters said Saturday.

Over 200 New York City Fire Department firefighters responded to a devastating 5 alarm fire at an apartment building located at Broadway and West 144 Street, Manhattan on Friday afternoon.

The Daily Mail said some witnesses told PIX11 that sections of the building's facade are falling to the street below. "We were afraid, we still are, we were afraid of the building collapsing", Leonard said.

It's unclear how many people were inside the building when the blaze started.

22 families have been given shelter in the meantime. Another nearby building was also evacuated.

Firefighters rushed to tame the blaze in the six-story apartment building Friday, which broke out at 3:15 pm.

Dramatic footage shows large plumes of smoke coming from the building as well as the entire roof on fire. At least seven firefighters sustained injuries while battling the blaze.
