Assad-Putin embrace tells story of Russia's Syria campaign

Those talks were part of an Asia trip in which Trump tried to persuade Russia, China, and other countries to pressure North Korea into giving up its nuclear weapons program.

They will also handle the delivery of humanitarian aid to Syria and possible contributions to the Geneva process toward a political solution in the country under U.N. Security Council Resolution 2254.

Russia, Iran and Turkey - all of which have backed Assad's forces - have authored a peace initiatives in an effort to resolve the Syrian civil war that has been raging since 2011.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders confirmed the call, and said a readout from the USA side will be coming soon.

Turkey and Russian Federation, together with Iran, are the guarantor countries which brokered a cease-fire in Syria in December 2016, which led to the Astana talks that ran parallel to UN-backed discussions in Geneva to find a political solution to war in Syria. They agreed on a number of principles for the future of Syria.
