On Tuesday morning, Punjab police officials contacted their Delhi counterparts with information on the suspected criminals putting up at the house near Dwarka Mor metro.

"We have recovered 17 firearms, mostly pistols and rifles of different bore sizes, and more than a 100 cartridges".

A major encounter broke out between dreaded criminals and police forces in New Delhi's Dwarka locality on Tuesday.

The exchange of fire took place inside a house in which six suspected members of a gang active in Punjab had been hiding for a month.

In the middle of all the action, one of the suspects, later identified as Toni, managed to slide down from one of the windows to a Delhi Metro Rail Corporation office, which shares boundary with the building, and escape. The local district police assisted them in the operation.

A large quantity of arms and ammunition have also been recovered from the criminals, reports said.

Umesh, who works for a private firm and lives near the metro station, said he was headed to work when he saw a man in plain clothes sprint with a sophisticated weapon in his hand. "The man then began firing towards a building".

Initially, the most wanted criminals of Punjab were asked to surrender but when they started firing shots, police arrested them.

The man said he soon realised the person in the plain clothes was a policeman.
