The defection, subsequent surgeries and slow recovery of the soldier have riveted South Korea, but it will be a huge embarrassment for the North, which claims all defections are the result of rival Seoul kidnapping or enticing North Koreans to defect.

However, the jeep got stuck in a ditch and the soldier jumped out and started running toward the south.

Video footage shows the soldier crashing a military jeep before making his escape, sprinting towards the border while under fire.

Four North Korean soldiers, weapons in their hands, race by the blue huts that straddle the line and are familiar to anyone who has toured the only spot on the border where North and South Korean soldiers face off within spitting distance of each other.

"These designations include companies that have engaged in trade with North Korea cumulatively worth hundreds of millions of dollars".

A North Korean soldier, whose identity has not been revealed, has regained consciousness.

The United Nations Command (UNC), which controls the demilitarized zone between North and South Korea, released dramatic footage of a North Korean solider defecting to the South earlier this month.

Forty minutes later, the video has switched to infrared to show the heat signatures of two South Korean soldiers as they crawl on their hands and knees, using a wall as cover, toward the prone defector.

While on average more than 1,000 North Koreans defect to the South every year, most travel via China and it is unusual for a North Korean to cross the land border dividing the two Koreas, which have been in a technical state of war since their 1950-53 conflict ended in a truce, not a peace treaty.

The escape is a scene of hope: A North Korean defies all odds in search of a better life.

He says the soldier watched "Transformers", "CSI", and "Bruce Almighty", and enjoyed the song "Gee" by popular South Korean female band "Girls' Generation".

North Korea has called U.S. President Donald Trump's decision to relist the country as a state sponsor of terrorism a "serious provocation" that justifies its development of nuclear weapons.

He underwent two rounds of surgeries to fix internal organ damage and other injuries.

"The patient is not going to die" said doctor Lee Guk-jong, an experienced surgeon well known in the country for successfully treating the captain of a South Korean ship who suffered six gunshot wounds in a pirate attack in 2011.

North Korea is also conducting a thorough ideological scrutiny of the political unit of their military for the first time in 20 years, said Kim Byung-kee, another member of the committee.
