Chip Kelly becomes the Bruins' 17th head football coach on a five-year, $23.3 million contract with a $9 million reciprocal buyout, UCLA Athletics announced Saturday. The Eagles won 10 games in each of Kelly's first two seasons, and an NFC East Division Championship in his first season in 2013, when he was also named the Maxwell Club NFL Coach of the Year. What Kelly makes at UCLA will offset that and reduce what the 49ers owe him.

"I am thrilled to welcome Chip Kelly to Westwood", UCLA athletic director Dan Guerrero said in a statement.

Chip Kelly is back in the Pac-12.

UCLA is looking to replace Jim Mora, whom the Bruins just fired earlier in the week.

The San Francisco 49ers then made a decision to try Kelly as their head coach, but he was canned after just one season thanks to a 2-14 record in 2016. Kelly finished his time at OR with a 46-7 record as head coach (2009-12), including victories in the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl.

On Saturday morning, it was reported on College GameDay that Kelly would not be appearing on ESPN and ESPN2 throughout the day as he normally does to provide analysis for games around the country.

Kelly last coached collegiately at OR, going 46-7 with the Ducks from 2009 to 2012.

UCLA defeated California on Friday night under interim coach Jedd Fisch to improve to 6-6 for the season, making the Bruins bowl eligible.
