After the phony war of their first season in Manchester, the rivalry between Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola will resume for real in Sunday's seismic derby showdown at Old Trafford.

Manchester City star Kevin De Bruyne has no time for talk of karma when it comes to assessing Paul Pogba's Manchester derby absence.

This was City's club-record 12th successive league victory, demonstrating again that even on nights when their football does not catch the breath, they have the steel, nous and spirit to eke out a win.

Manchester City midfielder Yaya Toure has crowned his side the best in Europe on current form, citing their footballing style as second to none so far this season.

A derby is always special.

It was their 13th win in a row in the Premier League and leaves Man City eight points clear at the top of the table. "I think the character has shown in the last game".

Though City are assured of top spot, the game is a pivotal one for their hosts, with Shakhtar needing a point to secure progression at the expense of Napoli, who face pointless Feyenoord in their final group game. "The way we control games is fantastic".

He said: "Maybe [it is] good for me to get a little bit of rest and prepare myself for Sunday".

"They're first for good reason, because they've been doing great at the start of the season".

The incident came after Raheem Sterling's late victor sent the Etihad into pandemonium, setting them up for a record-equalling 13th consecutive Premier League victory against West Ham on Sunday.

They followed up impressive wins at Watford and Arsenal with a 2-1 defeat of CSKA Moscow that sent them into the Champions League last 16 and have not lost at home since last year's loss to City - a run of 40 matches. I am so pleased to see them playing that well.

Zabaleta said: "It was really nice to be back in front of the City fans but I was a little upset because I thought we did great and were so close to getting at least one point".
