Some rural communities could be cut off and power supplies interrupted.

Storm Caroline is expected to batter the United Kingdom with gusts of up to 90mph and poses a potential risk to life, the Met Office says.

Flights and ferry services have been cancelled while dozens of schools are closed across the north of the country.

A trampoline was blown on the railway line at Patterton in East Renfrewshire, and a gazebo at Coatbridge in North Lanarkshire.

If the satellite imagery is anything to go by, then the United Kingdom will get shafted pretty hard by the storm too, with the Met Office issuing warnings of their own.

High winds will affect parts of Scotland, but the storm system - the third of the current winter storm cycle - will also generate strong and blustery winds over Ireland.

Gusts of up to 110km/h are expected along all coastal areas today ahead of Storm Caroline's passage over the North West and North towards Scotland on Thursday.

The strong wind alert is valid until 11.55pm on Thursday, with an amber warning for northern Scotland. Virgin Trains services were also delayed.

ScotRail tweeted: "There is a trampoline blocking the line in the Patterton area".

Super-sized waves with a 33ft swell - bigger than a double decker bus - have formed off the coast of Scotland as Storm Caroline gathers strength in the Atlantic.

CNR International said 69 of the 159 staff on Ninian South, about 240 miles from Aberdeen, would be leaving the structure as a precaution.

There have been snow showers across high ground in Scotland.

Later this week, snow and falling temperatures are forecast for parts of Britain.

Forecasters say Snow showers are expected to become increasingly frequent over northern Scotland late on Thursday and are expected across many other parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, Wales and western England on Friday.

Northern Ireland, Wales and central parts of the UK can expect snow throughout Sunday, according to UK Snow Updates, while London will get some of the white stuff on Monday.
