Patrick Mahomes will start at quarterback in place of Smith in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Broncos, Terez A. Paylor of the Kansas City Star reports. "He will learn from it", Reid said of Mahomes starting.

"I mean, I think there's advantages and disadvantages that you can make arguments for", he said. "We'll see. We'll see about what coach does with the time and all of that".

"It's not going to hurt him for sure", Reid said. Mahomes is known as a gunslinger and it's likely that Matt Nagy, the team's offensive coordinator and playcaller, will give him a chance to show off his arm against a challenging secondary employed by the Broncos-one that includes Aqib Talib and Chris Harris.

Mahomes, whom the Chiefs traded up 17 spots to select No. 10 overall, has yet to take a regular-season snap, as Alex Smith has authored a career year in his 13th season.

Reid declined to say who else will get a week off, but he indicated that Mahomes will have enough support that the young quarterback will have a legitimate opportunity to succeed.

Denver and Jacksonville could also use a veteran quarterback next year if they can afford Smith's contract. The biggest difference this week will be in the amount of first-team reps he gets - the majority of them as Smith operates the scout squad. Kansas City has gotten hot of late en route to winning three straight games after losing six of the team's previous seven contests.
