Doctors warn flu season could peak due to travel, parties

About a quarter involved residents more than 65 years old, according to the state health department. The proportion of outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI) has reached 3.5%-up from 2.7% the previous week-and is continuing to climb above the national baseline of 2.2%.

The 12 states with widespread activity are Arkansas, California, Connecticut, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Mississippi, Missouri, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Virginia, and Wisconsin.

Throughout the state, some doctors at area hospitals have also noticed flu activity picking up. Another 25 states experienced minimal activity.

Many of those cases are people who did get the flu vaccine, though.

During last year's flu season, 4,590 cases of flu were reported, about half of which were from New Castle County.

During flu season, Fresno County health officials remind people to get plenty of rest, eat a healthy diet including fruits and vegetables and be physically active each day. This of course includes loved ones and acquaintances who are older, very young children, pregnant women and people we interact with who have certain long-term health conditions and are more vulnerable to serious flu complications.

"The flu vaccine has to be formulated months in advance in order to have it ready".

Following Australia's recent severe flu season, marked by a record number of flu cases and low vaccine effectiveness, public health experts have warned that the United States may be in for a similarly rough flu season.

"There are currently flu cases on the island, so protect yourself and your family now".

And, as previously, the CDC makes the compelling case the more people who get vaccinated, the more people who will be protected from flu.

Health officials are anxious, with so many people traveling for Christmas and New Year's, cases of the flu will skyrocket.

Each year, a flu vaccine is created to target strains of the viruses expected to be most dominant that particular season.

A spike in flu cases during the holidays is not unusual.

The HHSA's weekly "Influenza Watch" report noted that the jump coincided with an uptick of cases at long-term care facilities.

It's flu season - that time where it seems no matter what we do or how clean we keep our hands, we seem to pick up one of the circulating flu viruses that are so common during this time of year.

Even if vaccinated, there are more ways to prevent the spread of influenza.
