A group is circulating petitions to put raising Michigan's minimum wage to $12 an hour by 2022 on the November ballot.

New York City fast-food workers will be paid $15 an hour beginning December 31, 2018.

As of December 31, minimum wage in Upstate New York has increased to $10.40 per hour (not including Westchester, Suffolk, Nassau Counties, and New York City), and $11.75 for fast food workers outside of New York City.

The 15-cent increase for 2018 is the largest hourly increase since 2012, when the wage rose by 36 cents an hour, according to the Department of Economic Opportunity.

However, Goodell said he does sympathize with the working poor and how hard it is to balance a budget on minimum wage. The increase will be phased in over a longer period for workers in the rest of the state.

"The paid family leave requirements of New York State have taken money out of employee paychecks and have created scheduling challenges for employers in a time when finding employees is hard". Their pay goes up by 15 cents an hour starting today January 1.

However, the minimum wage increases only apply to restaurants that are part of a chain of 30 or more locations nationwide.

In 2017, Ireland had the second highest rate of minimum wage of countries who have a minimum wage structure in the European Union, according to a report published by Eurostat earlier this month.

Assemblyman Andy Goodell, R-Jamestown, said many economic studies have been done that show there will be a loss of entry-level jobs as the wages in NY state increase. Lawmakers later changed the law to only require employers to make up the difference when tips don't exceed the minimum wage.

"The increase in the minimum wage will mean a boost for our lowest paid people in society in 2018".
