Speaking on the Late Show on Wednesday, he said: "You know folks, its awards season".

Cape Town - Channel24 reported earlier this week that fake news king and caustic American president Donald Trump announced he is starting his own Dishonest Media Awards from the White House that he will dish out on the day after this Sunday's upcoming Golden Globe Awards.

Directing his words to Trump, he added: "Personally, I'm excited for your Dishonest & Corrupt Media Awards".

The commander-in-chief tweeted last week they'd be given out Monday and "cover Dishonesty & Bad Reporting in various categories from the Fake News Media". "Stay tuned!", he wrote.

The book's publication renewed debate on Mr Trump's mental health.

After the advert was released, The Daily Show's official Twitter account poked fun at Trump's literacy, saying: "Hey @realDonaldTrump, show them you're not semiliterate!"

After the interview, Trump tore into Tapper, referring to him as a "flunky".

And, yes, we are actually talking about a Fake News Awards ceremony that has been created by the leader of the free world.

"For your most dishonest & corrupt media awards of the year consideration", the ad began, including various real quotes, including from Breitbart calling the show "political propaganda", and the New York Post describing it as "monotonous...liberal dogma".

After sharing his excitement at the prospect of winning an award, the host of The Late Show revealed that he had purchased a "billboard in New York's City Times Square in hopes of increasing his chances of being honored in categories such as "Least Bretibarty", "The Eric Trump Memorial Award for Disappointment" and "Smallest Button".

It is unclear how Mr Trump's awards will be judged.
