Steve Bannon stepping down from Breitbart

In a statement, Trump said Bannon has nothing to do with his presidency and has "lost his mind".

Now, the man who took considerable credit for President Trump's shocking win in 2016 finds himself cast out - most importantly, from the good graces of Robert and Rebekah Mercer, the billionaire GOP donors who fund Breitbart and a variety of other Bannon-linked ventures.

Bannon sought to make amends in a statement on Sunday, but a White House spokesperson said it didn't change his standing with the president.

Bannon and Breitbart will work together on a smooth and orderly transition, the news site added.

In an effort to try to fix the damage from the book, Bannon said his "treasonous" comment was directed at a former Trump campaign manager, Paul Manafort, who also attended the meeting at Trump Tower.

But Bannon drew the ire of the White House last week when The Guardian revealed that author Michael Wolff quoted him in his book "Fire and Fury" as saying a Trump Tower meeting involving Donald Trump Jr., Jared Kushner, and a Russian lawyer during the 2016 campaign was "unpatriotic" and perhaps "treasonous". "And those statements still stand", he said.

Bannon did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters. The move follows a brutal week for Bannon, after President Trump - and Bannon's patrons, the Mercer family - disowned him.

"Steve is a valued part of our legacy, and we will always be grateful for his contributions, and what he has helped us to accomplish", Breitbart CEO Larry Solov said.

He supported Republican Senate candidate Roy Moore in his primary fight against incumbent Luther Strange, who was backed by Trump and mainstream Republicans.
