Apple Wants More Ebook Market, Hire's Amazon's Audible VP

A new report from Bloomberg suggests that Apple is ready to dive back into ebooks, and points to evidence hiding in the iOS 11.3 beta that a revamped ebooks app is in the works.

According to a new Bloomberg report, sources familiar with the matter said the iPhone maker is quietly working on a major upgrade of the app, which could play a key role in its growth plans.

iBooks is the latest app that Apple is redesigning as part of its goal of generating $50 billion in annual revenue by 2021. This part of the company's business, which among others includes iBooks, the App Store and iCloud, rose 34 percent in the fourth quarter. That follows other Apple services, like iTunes and iTunes Podcasts, that changed into apps like Apple Music and Apple Podcasts.

Gurman pointed out that the "Apple Books Store" rebranding appears to be a strategy by which Apple hopes to regain its footing in the the e-books market - a category dominated by e-commerce giant, Amazon - in the wake of its previous fallout with the U.S. Department of Justice.

The period since then has seen Inc. cement its leadership position in the e-book market. Apple recently moved its audiobook offerings from the Music app to the iBooks app, but having a dedicated tab for audiobooks will make them more easily accessible for customers. It may also have a redesigned book store that looks similar to the redesign App Store that the company launched in 2017.

Apple is working on a redesigned version of its iBooks e-book reading application for iPhones and iPads and has hired an executive from Amazon to help. There's no official date for the debut of the new app, but it's reportedly slated to be released in the coming months.
