Nancy Pelosi Presses Paul Ryan to Allow Full Immigration Debate in House

But liberal Democrats have been adamant since late a year ago that they would use spending bills as leverage to build pressure for an immigration deal.

Before Pelosi's speech Wednesday, the longest floor remarks from a leader came from then-House GOP Leader John Boehner in 2009 speaking against the Democrats' cap and trade legislation. Asked if she was "whipping" Democrats to oppose the budget measure, Pelosi told reporters, "I've just been on the floor all day".

"It's not being made a priority", Barragan said of the party's push to protect those enrolled in the program known as Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA.

Pelosi said the deal now includes increases in defense and non-defense spending, as well as funding for disaster aid.

Unless enough House Democrats come on board, it's unclear if the budget deal can pass.

Aides in both parties said the budget measure may also contain a provision to raise the government's $20.5 trillion borrowing limit.

Pelosi chose to give her remarks late Tuesday night and gave a heads up to Schumer, aides said.

The California Democrat spoke for more than 8 hours before yielding the floor.

Observers noted that Pelosi spoke without taking a bathroom break or taking anything more than a sip of water.

The House didn't always set limits on floor debate in the way the modern chamber now does. He served as Speaker of the House and unsuccessfully sought the democratic nomination for President in 1912.

The lack of a unified Democratic strategy infuriated liberal leaders, who have spent recent weeks intensifying pressure on Democrats to use what little leverage they had in the Republican-controlled Congress to protect dreamers.

While laughing, Pelosi announced that she'd broken a record and said she wondered what the last record-breaking speech was about. And at least some House Democrats indicated they would support it. Alvarado recently finished law school and passed the IL bar. A new Quinnipiac University poll, released Wednesday, found support for the tax cuts rising from 32 percent in January to 39 percent today, while Trump's approval had climbed from 36 to 40 percent.

Throughout her extended speech, Pelosi offered trenchant, poignant anecdotes about young dreamers, as well as some random tangents, because how can anyone go for 7 hours without occasionally drifting into incoherence?

House Speaker Paul Ryan's spokesperson said Ryan has "repeatedly stated" he supports an immigration reform bill including DACA. But the party would not run on repealing the entire tax package, arguing instead that Democrats would bring "balance" to tax policy. "Those are the people we need to speak to". "Republicans control everything, and they've given too much authority to this president".

"We want to send these people back, this talent, this achievement?"
