President Trump, in brief comments to reporters, praised fthe job done by former senior aide Rob Porter and wished "a wonderful career" to Porter, who left the White House Thursday after being accused of spousal abuse by his two ex-wives.

Carroll, a White House lawyer who quietly became one of chief of staff John Kelly's deputies late a year ago, is expected to be tapped to become the administration's drug czar as early as Friday, two sources with knowledge of the decision told CNN.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said she had not discussed the allegations against Porter with Trump.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Trump has been privately complaining about Kelly and wondering whether to replace him, according to two sources familiar with the matter. "He did a very good job when he was at the White House".

Porter's two ex-wives accusing him of physical and verbal abuse.

The White House claims that the backlog of interim security clearances is a procedural outcome of the review process carried out by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and White House Office of Security, which can take time to complete.

At first, White House officials rallied around Porter, who described the allegations as false and "vile claims".

Allegations against ousted staff secretary Rob Porter prompted a litany of questions about the president's recruitment and the ethics of those running the world's only superpower.

Porter, now dating Trump's reputed favorite aide Hope Hicks, was accused of punching and choking first wife Colbie Holderness earlier this week. "The truth must be determined, and that is what was going on with Rob Porter".

However, Kelly later changed his tune when Holderness shared with the press graphic photos taken after her then-husband Porter "threw [her] down on the bed and punched [her] in the face" during a fight in 2005.

"While we are all processing the shocking and troubling allegations made against a former White House staffer", Kelly declared. Who cares if Porter had multiple degrees and implemented Kelly's paper strategy? One of the accounts included photos alleging to show the abuse.

Kelly handpicked Carroll from the White House counsel's office to join his office after his principal deputy chief of staff, Kirstjen Nielsen, was tapped to lead the Department of Homeland Security.

The support for an alleged batterer who served 13 months in a sensitive White House post is fueling scrutiny of the bench marks for disqualifying top staffers or denying them full security clearances.

"Rob Porter is a man of true integrity and honor and I can't say enough good things about him".

When news first broke that Porter had abused both his first wife Colbie Holderness and his second wife Jennifer Willoughby, White House Chief of Staff John Kelly's initial statement on the matter was shockingly dismissing given the serious nature of the allegations against his employee. But Porter remained in his role, delivering all manner of information straight to the president's desk until he resigned this week.
