Chris Mazdzer set U.S. Olympic history Sunday by finishing second in the luge men's singles competition, becoming the first American man to medal in an event that made its Winter Games debut in 1964. Germany's Johannes Ludwig took the bronze.

American luger Chris Mazdzer was on a mission to end a 54-year-old drought.

"Hi everyone this is U.S. luge racer Chris Mazdzer ok bye", Buzzfeed reporter David Muck brought Mazbdzer's good looks to the internet's attention on Saturday. "I've had a rough last two years, and it just shows: Don't ever give up".

Mazdzer is a three-time Olympian, having finished 13th in both 2010 and 2014. In fifth place after Run 1, he had the second fastest run of all competitors on Run 2 to jump into fourth place - and he was only 0.001 second behind Roman Repilov, an Olympic Athlete from Russian Federation.

Loch was still grinning in the leaders' booth as his rivals took their turns but he was noticeably surprised when Mazdzer bettered his time with a scintillating 47.534-second run to leap into second.

But, Germany's Felix Loch who looked like he was on his way to his third consecutive Olympic gold, faltered on the final run and finished 5th.

Then, when he needed it most, Mazdzer delivered in his fourth run.

Mazdzer was thrilled with his silver, having been nearly at "rock bottom" with his form only weeks before.

Fellow American Taylor Morris finished in 18th place and Tucker West did not make it to the final run.

Long itself an underdog - if not an outright underachiever - USA Luge now has its first medal on the men's side, joining five previous medals won either in doubles competition or in women's singles. And when it comes to men's singles luge, Mazdzer will always be the first.
