Porter resigned from his White House position this week after the accusations became public.

His departure comes just days after another Trump official, Rob Porter, quit over allegations of abuse from two ex-wives, something he denies.

Despite his call for "due process", Trump has a history of issuing condemnations and promulgating conspiracies based on "a mere allegation".

New allegations against Lewandowski surfaced late past year, after the singer Joy Villa, a Trump supporter, filed a sexual assault complaint accusing Lewandowski of slapping her on the buttocks at a holiday party.

Corbett alleges that during her marriage to Sorensen, partly when he was a top policy adviser to Republican Maine Gov. Paul LePage, he "ran a vehicle over her foot, put out a cigarette on her hand, threw her into a wall and grasped her menacingly by her hair while they were alone on their boat in remote waters off Maine's coast, an incident she said left her fearing for her life". By the time the president was fully briefed of the claims against Porter on Wednesday, the once-rising White House star had already resigned, according to the official.

"Before we were contacted by the media, we learned last night that there were allegations", White House spokesman Raj Shah said in a statement Friday.

The problem is, further reporting revealed that what Kelly described didn't happen.

The report said the couple also had a history of arguments that turned physical, though the police report said they attended counseling.

The Washington Post reported Friday night that a second White House staff member, speechwriter David Sorenson, was resigning amid domestic abuse allegations.

"On CNN's "State of the Union", Conway defended Trump's response Friday to the accusations against Porter, in which the president praised Porter's work and said "we wish him well" in his career".

Trump doesn't name any individuals in his post, but he seems to be referring to Rob Porter.

On Friday, former Vice President Joe Biden, who as a legislator helped pass the Violence Again Women Act, criticized Trump's comment about Porter.

"That's like saying that axe murderer out there, he's a great painter", said former Vice President Joe Biden. Porter has denied the allegations as "vile" and part of a "coordinated smear campaign". "Or the fact that domestic violence has no place in our society and no place in the White House". He worked very hard.

Last month, Kelly ran afoul of President Trump when in a closed-door Congressional Hispanic Caucus meeting, and then later in an interview on Fox News, he said the president's views on the border wall had "evolved". Both ex-wives say they shared this information with the Federal Bureau of Investigation a year ago, and the Daily Mail is reporting that Mr.

Mr Sorensen or Ms Corbett could not immediately be reached for comment.

Who knew what and when?

"The president believes, as he said the other day, you have to consider all sides", said senior counselor Kellyanne Conway.

The Porter matter has intensified scrutiny of White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, a former army general brought in to bring order to an administration that had been seen as chaotic under previous chief, Reince Priebus.
