On Thursday (15 February), the president's son liked a tweet by conservative commentator Kurt Schlichter that suggested the Federal Bureau of Investigation had been too preoccupied with undermining Donald Trump to prevent the school shooting.

Asked if he'd talked with victims, Trump added: "I did indeed, and it's very sad something like that could happen".

After the Orlando shootings at a gay nightclub that left 49 dead in June 2016, then-candidate Trump tweeted, "Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism".

In the first hours after the Parkland shooting, the only statement from the White House was that Trump was "aware" and monitoring the situation.

Trump is expected to meet with officials from the Broward County Sheriff's Office later Friday.

My outrage about the killings of students and staff members at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School can not be described.

And don't you dare let anyone say it's too soon to be talking about it, because you said it after Vegas, you said it after Sandy Hook, you say that after every one of these eight now-fatal school shootings we had in this country this year. "It's a dream. It hasn't hit me yet".

"Whatever you do, do something because I, for one, am very, very, very, very exhausted of this", he said before showing clips of politicians and the president saying it's too early to talk about gun control.

At least 1,000 people attended a candlelight vigil near the school Thursday night, some openly sobbing as the victims' names were read aloud. "Shooting her! And killing her!" And she's made it personal, invoking the president's 11-year-old son, Baron.

"President Trump, you say what can you do?"

The day before, a teenager was wounded by a shot fired in her school cafeteria in Texas. Action. We need it now. We need security now for all these children.

"I would dread the thought that this country would go down the American path so far as the possession of firearms", said Howard - at a gun rally. He did promise to tackle school safety and "the hard issue of mental health".

He also said he'll be working with Congress "on many fronts".

Trump ignored shouted questions from journalists as he departed about a report in The New Yorker magazine that he had affair in 2006 with a Playboy model.

Nikolas Cruz, 19, gunned down students and staff with a rifle on Wednesday at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, FL.

Trump also issued a proclamation Thursday honoring victims of the shooting at the Parkland, Florida, high school where 17 were killed.

The profile photo on Cruz's Instagram account showed a masked face wearing a "Make America Great Again" hat like those associated with Trump's campaign.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California criticized the lack of action on a measure she introduced after the mass shooting in Las Vegas a year ago to ban bump stocks, which allow semi-automatic weapons to fire more rapidly. More than a dozen other people were injured in the shooting spree.

Trump said he wanted to speak directly to students who may feel confused or afraid.
