Rippon has been outspoken against Mike Pence, and he is "one of a few US athletes who said they will not go to the White House for a post-Olympic celebration hosted by President Trump", according to USA Today.

Rippon immediately began his one-sided feud with Vice President Pence, after it was announced that the VP would lead the US delegation to the the Winter Olympics. USA Today points out that NBC's choice to feature Rippon is significant, because it tangentially endorses his hard line against the Trump presidency.

"I am so flattered that NBC wanted me to work as a correspondent, but if I took this opportunity, I would have to leave the Olympic team and I would have to leave the (Olympic) Village", Rippon said in an interview on NBC Sports.

"You mean Mike Pence, the same Mike Pence that funded gay conversion therapy?"

"It felt worth the 28-year wait, you know?" he said after winning team bronze, per John Paul Brammer of NBC News.

"I have no problem talking about what I've said because I stand by it, but I think right now the Olympics are about Olympic competition and the athletes involved".

Before he got bronze, Adam and freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy this year became the first open gay men to even compete at the Winter Olympics for the United States. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to add to his incredible showing in Pyeongchang, South Korea, with another medal.

"I feel like I have a lot of big things coming up next". Rippon was an alternate for the 2010 Vancouver Games and didn't make the 2014 Sochi team (instead, he ate In-N-Out Burger with fellow 2018 teammate Mirai Nagasu).

His rise to stardom during Pyeongchang has also been bolstered by his personality and social media presence.
