Nikolas Cruz is accused of opening fire Wednesday at the school killing more than a dozen people and injuring several.

The couple recounted their experience from the Valentine's Day shooting, saying things seemed normal in the morning, with the exception of Cruz saying he wasn't going to school.

Cruz legally bought his AR-15 rifle in Florida about a year ago.

According to CNN, Cruz posted disparaging comments about Jews, African Americans and gays in a private chat group on the social media network Instagram. Students who knew Cruz described him as a volatile teenager whose unusual behaviour had caused others to end friendships with him. The caller was concerned Cruz could attack a school.

"He had some involvement with the Clearwater Republic of Florida cell at some point", Jordan Jereb said in a telephone interview. He said up until the time of the shooting he thought he was the only one who had a key to that safe. "The local agents came to my house and asked me for more information", Ben Bennight told local TV station WLOX in Biloxi, Mississippi.

Cruz had on a maroon polo shirt bearing an ROTC insignia and the school's eagle mascot when he was arrested off school grounds about an hour after the attack.

Wray said the bureau is still investigating what happened.

Jonathan Guimaraes, 17, told the Herald that he had been in JROTC with Cruz. "He was wearing his JROTC uniform".

The Florida department of children and families' abuse hotline was alerted to the footage, with Cruz having been listed as a victim of alleged medical neglect and inadequate supervision on the part of his adoptive mother Lynda Cruz, who died previous year. The couple had adopted Nikolas and his biological brother. The friend of Cruz's mother had a toddler, Snead said, and did not want the child to be around the weapons.

She also criticised adults who knew the killer was mentally ill for not doing more to prevent him from owning a gun, with the U.S. leader having tweeted the day after the massacre that Cruz had not been flagged to the authorities.

Cruz's court-appointed lawyer said he had expressed remorse for his crimes. He later asked a school friend if he could live with him and his family.

A year before, it was discovered that Mr. Cruz had a Nazi symbol and a racial slur on his book bag. "Just a mildly troubled kid who'd lost his mom".

"Though there had been an account of medical neglect, the report said that "[Cruz's] clinician from Henderson mental health has stated that there are no issues with [Cruz's] medication and he has been compliant with taking his medication and keeps all of his appointments". Kimberly said they are having trouble processing the events of last Wednesday. "He wasn't dumb, just naïve", James Snead told the Sun Sentinel.

"He's a broken human being", public defender Melisa McNeill told reporters.
