The new drop-top T-Roc will be a spiritual successor to the VW Golf Cabriolet, which was quietly dropped from the brand's United Kingdom line-up back in 2016. With the new cabriolet-based T-Roc, Volkswagen hope it will further reinforce its presence in the compact SUV segment.

The Volkswagen T-Roc: it's the German brand's take on the small SUV.

The T-Roc convertible will join an eclectic mix of other models in the Osnabrück factory, which as well as the Tiguan, also builds Porsche's Cayman sports auto, and handles painting duties for the Skoda Fabia. "The Osnabrück plant now has bright prospects for the future". Following the run-up phase, a production volume of up to 20,000 vehicles per year is planned. By then, it is expected that 40% of all vehicles sold by Volkswagen are to be made up of SUVs.

Only Skoda, Fiat and Citroen posted lower light-truck shares in Europe, where the market average for sales from volume brands was 28 percent previous year, JATO's figures show.

Scheduled for a launch at the turn of the decade, the T-Roc cabrio is to be built at the Osnabrück plant - formerly the home of coachbuilder Karmann, which produced the Golf Cabriolet and original drop-top Beetle.

Little information has been released on the new T-Roc convertible short of a single sketch, but it would likely utilise the same range of turbocharged petrol and diesel engines as the hard-top version. "With the cabriolet based on the T-Roc, we will be adding a highly emotional model to the range", stated Dr. Herbert Diess, CEO of the Volkswagen brand. The T-Roc was Volkswagen fourth SUV, after Tiguan, Atlas and Touareg.

The T-Roc uses the MQB platform, similar to the Volkswagen Golf, Seat León, Audi A3, and Skoda Octavia. It measures 4178mm X 1831mm X 1501mm, with wheelbase of 2595mm.
