The teacher has been identified as 53-year-old Jesse Randall Davidson.

A school spokesperson said employees have access to an employee assistance program but she could not comment on if Davidson took advantage of it.

Davidson remains in Whitfield County Jail in Dalton on charges of aggravated assault with a gun, terroristic threats and acts, carrying a weapon in a school safety zone without a license, reckless conduct, disrupting a public school and possessing a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He says he'd be surprised "with any of our teachers" if an incident like today's happens.

The teacher who allegedly fired a gun inside of a Georgia high school reportedly previously confessed to "killing a woman". After the gunshot, the school was immediately placed on lockdown.

Police didn't say why Davidson fired the gun, but noted that he aimed away from anyone into an exterior window.

The school's student resource officer had left campus momentarily to stop by the nearby middle school, Bartoo said.

His encounters with Dalton police led some officers to suspect he was facing mental health issues.

Students at the high school, which has an enrolment of about 2,000 pupils, were taken to a nearby convention centre after the evacuation, authorities said. The gun has been recovered.

Only one minor injury was reported on Wednesday - a girl who hurt her ankle while fleeing in the pandemonium, Frazier said.

Dalton student Chondi Chastain tweeted at the NRA in response to Wednesday's incident.

The principal said Davidson was an "excellent teacher" who was well thought of, and "as far as I know he was fit to be at work". "Sure, I was scared like everybody else was", Principal Bartoo said.

"Certainly shocking. probably shock any school principal if one of their staff members pulled out a gun in a classroom and fired it", Bartloo said.

On Wednesday at around 11:30 a.m., Dalton City Police tweeted that officers were on the scene of reports of shots fired at Dalton High School located at 1500 Manly Street.

Davidson surrendered himself to authorities after about 45 minutes and was unharmed.

Police said in another report previous year that officers found Davidson during a school day sitting on the curb of a street, conscious but unresponsive and being held up by two school staff members. He called their execution of the lockdown "flawless". The building where the 14 students and three educators were fatally shot on February 14 will remain closed, officials said, as state lawmakers contemplate tearing it down and replacing it with a memorial to the victims.
