Veteran actress Shammi passes away

The late actor entertained movie buffs and the television audience alike.

The actor also shared some photographs of Shammi Aunty. Her third film was with Dilip Kumar and Madhubala, Sangdil (1952), which flopped and Shammi's career took a back seat. Thespian Amitabh Bachchan expressed grief over the demise of veteran and prolific actress Shammi, who died of prolonged illness. Spotting the "character actors" such as Tun Tun, Sunder, Agha, Shubha Khote, Mohan Choti, and Shammi Aunty in these became a fun game of sorts. He name was changed from Nargis to Shammi, on insistence of her mentor and director Tara Harish.

Shammi, or Shammi Aunty, as she was popularly known across the Indian film fraternity, breathed her last just before midnight yesterday. Shammi aunty has done significant roles im films like Coolie No 1, Hum, Gopi Kishan, Hum Saath-Saath Hain, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Preet Na Jane Reet, Aamne - Saamne, Upkar, Ittefaq, Half Ticket and many more. She also acted in TV serials. Her friends and colleagues from the industry including Farida Jalal, Asha Parekh, Annu Kapoor, Boman Irani, Farah Khan and others came to pay their last respects.
