It can be downloaded now for free on the App Store.

This isn't the first time Google Maps has teamed up with Nintendo.

There will be a yellow question mark in the bottom right of the updated app. Tap on this, and a message will pop up prompting you enable "Mario Time". (The abbreviated version of March 10 spells out as Mario, or MAR10.) For one week starting Saturday, Mario and his Go-Kart will replace the ubiquitous vehicle that appears on Google Maps as you take to the road. "He'll be a constant companion wherever you're driving this week-to work, to school, or the spaghetti house".

Mario Day event starts popping up in Google Maps for some

There won't be any red shell throwing or bananas along the route, so if you're leading the pack then you don't need to worry about a surprise spiny shell at all. If you say yes, Mario will become your position marker in the app. To try it out, install the latest update to Google Maps for Android or iOS.

If it doesn't show up for you, don't fret - it will be rolling out globally over the day.

Google is also asking users to share photos of their adventures as Mario on Instagram and Twitter with @GoogleMaps and the hashtag #MarioMaps. Don't forget to scrub out any personal information such as your home/work address though. We've seen it previously with nods to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and previous year with a Ms. Pac-Man shout-out. The search company added Pokémon to its Maps application in 2014 in time for April Fools' Day.
