If the promotional crescendo somehow has not reached your ears, well, this isn't an "Idol" rumor. As a Fox executive described it, after the series was canceled (ratings dropped and costs were rising), production company FremantleMedia was "determined to get this show back on the air as quickly as possible".

Suriel Hess from Ashland will be singing his heart out in front of the American Idol judges, Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie tonight. To say there's a lot riding on this high-priced programming gamble would be an extreme exercise in understatement. Shortly after that, rumors began to circulate that a revival was in the works. They need it badly.

The one thing missing?

Not fooling around!' As we get closer to the real deal I can nearly feel that we're going to be able to voice our opinions, ' he said, before adding the fighting words: 'I'm bringing my mace!' "For two days a week, Professor Richie is going to talk about the reality of what it takes to be an artist", he said in an interview with The New York Times. American Idol airs Sundays at 8pm on ABC.

But still, 13 million people tuned in to see someone named Trent Harmon win that 15th season, and that's a pretty good number in our crowded TV landscape.

While American Idol is still the show that locks one of the two exit doors and only uses footage of that mistake against the bad singers, it is also still the show that finds and elevates young vocal talent.

But all Death Stars come to an end. So producers took the show to ABC. But can you rebuild the Death Star? Episodes will be airing on Sundays and Mondays until late April when it shifts to Sundays.

Richie would be my favorite judge on the panel, but he makes a tactical error in the premiere, a kindness that is also a revealing lameness. Sensibility-wise, though, ABC's Idol is different.

A good part of that is the chemistry of the new judges - pop star Katy Perry, country singer Luke Bryan and Mr. One of the most memorable auditions is delivered by Catie Turner. It'll be a fast-paced season so buckle up and get ready for the fun.

"I really enjoyed meeting you today", said Perry.

"Naked and Afraid", 9 p.m. (DISCOVERY): Season-nine premiere; Amal and Duke endure a hurricane, venomous spiders, insects and nocturnal predators in the swamps of Florida.

With all of the success of NBC's "The Voice" overshadowing it's older, trailblazing singing-competition show, the student became the master. Ryan Seacrest will return as the show's host. But this brings us to yet another doubt hanging over the show's return. His brand has been tarnished recently by allegations of sexual harassment that he denies. I stand by him. And ABC is standing by him.

Keep up with the "American Idol" community and see what's trending on social media from judges, contestants and fans. In one sense, ABC and Seacrest are lucky.

That's a decidedly sour note for an "Idol" trying to emphasize upbeat, inspiring and positive vibes. Like the original American Idol, we have to sit through a round of auditions before we get to the actual competitors. While they've corned the market on people looking for love in all the wrong places thanks to The Bachelor and Bachelorette franchises, they've had no luck launching an Idol or The Voice of their own.
