Why Richard Sherman's contract is gold for 49ers

The San Francisco 49ers and Richard Sherman agreed to a heavily incentivized three-year contract. That would be one year older than Darrelle Revis was when he signed a $14 million contract with $39 million guaranteed with the Jets in 2015.

Over the weekend, the 49ers got their first substantial chance to put Garoppolo-as-selling-point to the test with cornerback Richard Sherman.

The New York Giants have formally cut veteran cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie after the two sides were unable to rework his contract.

The Seahawks made Sherman a fifth-round draft pick out of Stanford in 2011. "I admit it's kinda weird having to cheer for you now", wrote one, Candle STAC Park.

"We had something no other team could offer ... the ability to play Seattle twice a year", Lynch said. If Sherman returns to form, the 49ers will have locked up a top cornerback for a well-under-the-market rate. The second is the clincher; he later says he warned the 49ers sideline, "If you throw it my way, it will end the game".

Sherman also called the Raiders and Lions to tell them he had made his decision and then signed the deal.

While the National Football League free-agent period begins this week (teams can officially start negotiating with players Monday with signings allowed Wednesday), there may be nothing more emotion inducing that can happen this offseason than the sight of one of Seattle's most beloved players becoming a member of one of the Seahawks' bitterest of rivals.

I don't wish Sherman poorly, per se.

But it's not just Sherman's production on the field that piqued the 49ers' interest. "I have a way of showing that in my play". According to the Browns Pro Bowler, if Sherman wanted to prove himself, he should have signed a one-year deal, instead of letting the 49ers sit on his rights for three years.

Sherman said of his call to Seahawks general manager John Schneider: "They said they wouldn't be able to match that and he thought it was a solid deal". Still, it's a hedge for the 49ers as Sherman continues recovery from a torn Achilles tendon suffered November 9 at Arizona. Nevin Lawson and D.J. Hayden, the duo who logged the most playing time opposite Slay last season, are both set to become unrestricted free agents.

A lot of players may lack the knowledge necessary to act as their own agents, but at a potential savings of millions of dollars when it comes time to negotiate contracts with teams, they may now find it worthwhile to learn. "We played pretty well that game".

The numbers indicate maybe not, and also reveal why Seattle may have been willing to part with Sherman.

His size - 6-foot-3, 195 pounds - allows him to be physical against bigger receivers and win jump-ball situations.

8 career interceptions in 2013, leading the league.
