The games would be played at London's Olympic Stadium, now home to the Premier League club West Ham United.

The Red Sox have the option of having both games be Boston home games, a person familiar with the planning told The Associated Press. Because it originally was built for a 400-meter track, it is wider than other large stadiums in the London area and can best accommodate the dimensions of a baseball field.

In an email to the AP, Red Sox owner John Henry said: "This is something the two clubs have discussed for years with Major League Baseball and hopefully it will become a reality".

A London series between the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees is reportedly closer to being finalized, with a 2019 regular-season series in the works. "Always good to get that one more start, " he said, "but I do feel really good".

"Any time you can grow our game, that's a pretty cool thing", he added.

However, the Major League Baseball has not yet ventured into the European market, a bridge that has already been crossed by the National Basketball Association and the NFL, who have both made a visit to the British capital a tradition. June is the only time the building is available for baseball. An announcement of a finalized deal and scheduled games is set to be made within the next two months.

The most recent collective bargaining agreement between owners and players, which was ratified in 2016, includes a commitment to multiple worldwide destinations.

"I don't think so at this point".

"Ever since a London series became likely, once the latest collective bargaining agreement was hammered out a couple of years ago, the Red Sox and Yankees have each been clamouring for that first invitation" said Silverman.

This would be the Yankees' first worldwide regular-season game since 2004 when they opened up the season against the Tampa Bay Rays in Tokyo. The Cleveland Indians and the Minnesota Twins will play a two-game series in San Juan, Puerto Rico, on April 17-18, and the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers will play a three-game series in Monterrey, Mexico, on May 4-6.
