No one believed that man who this Friday killed one person and seriously injured anor to get his vehicle, with which he embarked on deadly journey in which he left anor policeman injured before killing two more people in a supermarket in Trèbes where y intrenched h To be dejected, could perpetrate this journey in name of Islamic State (ISIS).

Finally, Mr. Lakdim drove to the market, the Super U in nearby Trèbes, where he killed two more people and took several hostages.

A gendarme who was shot three times after voluntarily taking the place of a hostage during a supermarket siege in southwestern France on Friday has died, France announced on Saturday.

The IS claimed responsibility for the shooting attack.

The officer had agreed to take a hostage's place in the supermarket siege in southern France.

A lieutenant-colonel swapped himself in exchange for one of the hostages, Collomb said, adding that the 45-year-old had been seriously wounded. Witnesses said the man shouted, "I am a Daesh soldier", using another name for ISIS. Police shot the gunman dead after a four-hour standoff Friday at the Super U supermarket.

In a press conference late Friday, Paris Prosecutor Francois Molins said a female associate of Lakdim had been placed in custody in connection with Friday's attacks. "We had followed him and thought re was no radicalization".

France's Prime Minister Édouard Philippe said the incident "appears to be a terror attack". "We couldn't have said that he was a radical that would carry out an attack".

Arnaud Beltrame selflessly offered to swap for hostages

Speaking in Carcassonne, he said Lakdim's partner was suspected of "association with criminals with the aim of carrying out a terrorist act".

Macron said the investigation should answer several questions - when and how the gunman was radicalized and where he got a weapon.

Secretary-general of SGP Police-FO police union Yves Lefebvre said the man first fired six shots at police on their way back from a morning run near Carcassonne.

In January 2015, Amedy Coulibaly took over a kosher supermarket and demanded police to back off their pursuit of two brothers who had killed staff members of satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo days earlier.

France is part of a group of countries whose warplanes have been bombing Islamic State strongholds in Iraq and Syria, where the group has lost substantial ground in recent months. "He was already under surveillance when he suddenly made a decision to act", Interior Minister Gerard Collomb told reporters after flying to the scene.

Macron said a total of 16 people had been injured in the attacks in Carcassonne and Trebes.

A suspect has been surrounded at a supermarket in the town of Trebes, south of Toulouse, and might have taken hostages, national police said.

Trebes, a sleepy town of 5,000 people along the Canal du Midi, was on lockdown throughout Friday as helicopters swirled overhead and heavily armed and masked police carried out a massive operation in Lakdim's neighbourhood.

Police officials also claim that Lakdim sought the release of Salah Abdeslam, the only surviving terrorist from the November 2015 attacks in #Paris that killed 130 people.
