General Motors introduced an off-road capable variant of its 2019 GMC Sierra pickup truck, called the Sierra AT4, in advance of the New York International Auto Show on Monday. Then again, with the amount of tire-swallowing potholes now scattered around the Big Apple, a rugged truck like the Sierra AT4 could be the flawless vehicle for either off-road excursions or an especially bumpy commute. It features a suspension lifted by two inches and fitted with Rancho monotube shocks, and 18-inch wheels with knobby all-terrain tires. The Sierra AT4 comes standard with the MultiPro Tailgate and is available with the carbon fiber box that each debuted on the 2019 Sierra.

Powering the 2019 GMC Sierra AT4 is an updated version of the company's legendary 5.3L V-8 engine. The front bumper, grille surround and rear bumper are done in body-color paint, while the grille is black chrome. The regular Sierra's C-shaped LED lights are kept, and then black chrome appears on the LED fog lamp bezels and fender trim. A high-gloss black finish has been applied to the window trim, mirror caps and skid plate.

With the Sierra AT4, GMC is offering a choice of three engines.

Inside the interior also continues the darkened theme from the exterior with dark-tinted and textured aluminum finishes on the steering wheel, center stack and sill plates, as well as a unique Jet Black/Kalahari color accents in the leather seats.

"The 2019 Sierra AT4 is designed for the customer who wants an elevated presence on the road and the capability to venture off life's beaten path", said Duncan Aldred, vice president of Global GMC. Interior is specific to the AT4 and falls between SLT and Denali grades-meaning it's upscale and very well appointed, with trim elements that add to the pickup's youthful attitude.

The Sierra's head-up display projects an off-road inclinometer onto the windshield, including the fore-aft tilt, front tire angle and left-right tilt.

Surround Vision is available on Sierra AT4 and provides the driver with a bird's-eye view through an overhead image on the infotainment screen. The ProGrade Trailering System and related smartphone app also will be optional, as will 360-degree camera function displayed on the multimedia screen. Later in the first model year, the truck will get a carbon fiber box option, which replaces the standard steel box with a more durable version. The standard transmission is a 10-speed automatic.

The V-8 engines feature stop-start technology and GM's new Dynamic Fuel Management that enables the engine to operate on one to eight cylinders, depending on demand, to optimize power and efficiency. It's the first in a new line of off-road packages for the high-end truck brand.
