Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has been taken to a hospital with a fever, local media have reported.

"The prime minister is suffering from a high fever and is coughing", confirmed his spokesman. Earlier this month, at a meeting in the White House with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he was asked whether he would come for the ceremonial opening of the embassy to be housed temporarily at the USA consulate building in Jerusalem.

Benjamin Netanyahu has fallen ill as he faces accusations of bribery, fraud and breach of public trust in his own country.

"The prime minister did not complete the time required in order to recover from the illness he had two weeks ago and therefore the symptoms have gotten worse", the spokesman said in a text message.

A security cabinet meeting scheduled for Wednesday will take place as planned, an Israeli official told Reuters. He has denied any wrongdoing.

The prime minister, his wife, Sara, and their son were also questioned on Monday evening in connection to a corruption case involving an Israeli telecom giant. "The investigation is being carried out with the supervision of the state attorney and with the approval of the attorney general".

Earlier this month Trump said he was "thinking about" visiting Israel to seal his momentous policy decision, however Hadashot reported without citing sources that his schedule would not allow it and he was instead contemplating a visit in July. Support for Netanyahu's Likud party remains strong in opinion polls.
