New York's wealth (and hopes for this season) rests in the starting rotation as Noah Syndergaard, Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey and Steven Matz are all healthy and ready to shut down the National League.

The 2018 Baseball season started off with a thud for the St. Louis Cardinals.

The New York Mets are set to face off against the St. Louis Cardinals at Citi Field. He struck out 10 batters in six innings of work, but he did allow four runs (all earned) on six hits, including home runs to Yadier Molina and Jose Martinez.

The Mets are now 37-20 all-time on Opening Day, which is the best record in baseball history. The six walks were the most by a starter on opening day since Bob Weiland also walked six in the 1938 opener. He had 10 strikeouts and no walks over six innings. The only baserunner after Martinez's homer in the fifth came on a two-out walk to Molina in the ninth, the first walk by a Mets pitcher in the game ...

Rookie Jordan Hicks, making his big-league debut, allowed an infield hit to the first man he faced but then immediately got a double play ball and carved up Jay Bruce for an inning-ending strikeouts, throwing 100, 101 and 102 miles per hour fastballs along with a knee-buckling 86 miles per hour slider.

After Martinez, the Cardinals will send out Michael Wacha, who pitched the only complete game and shutout of his career last summer against the Mets.
