The visit equals his mother Queen Elizabeth II's tally of 16 royal tours of the former British colony and comes as the 91-year-old monarch winds back her worldwide travel commitments. The British crown's power in Australia is largely symbolic, and while the Queen remains hugely popular, the monarchy is viewed by some as an anachronistic colonial relic.

As prime minister, Turnbull now has nothing but praise for the Prince of Wales. In his speech, Prince Charles said "My wife and I could not be more delighted to be able to join all of you here on the Gold Coast this evening - and the many millions of you who are watching from your homes across the Commonwealth".

Later in the day, Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall opened the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast as part of their tour of the country.

Paintings of the Scottish Highlands are also taken out and about too, the book claimed.

Camilla Parker Bowles reportedly agreed to go on the trip in the hopes it would help Prince Charles' case for becoming the next Commonwealth Head, a title separate from the crown that he is not guaranteed to inherit.

The heir to the throne received a ceremonial welcome and 21-gun salute at Government House in Brisbane before meeting hundreds of well-wishers in the city's Botanic Gardens.

Jane - the oldest of the siblings - was 10 when Charles would visit.

Commonwealth Games officials have hit back at suggestions Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall was bored during Wednesday's opening ceremony, saying she was simply exhausted.

"It appears the prince is unable to answer this question", the Australian Republic Movement, which extended the invitation, said in a statement last month.
