Trump later threatened to hold off on signing the renegotiated deal until after his summit with Kim, which was widely seen as a move to pressure Seoul to remain tough with Pyongyang.

The US State Department has been in contact with the North Korean UN mission, while the intelligence services of both countries have been conducting parallel talks.

Trump imposed a number of sanctions on North Korea and threatened Kim that he would respond with "fire and fury" if Kim's regime attacked the USA or any of its allies in the region.

The North has previously demanded the withdrawal of U.S. troops based in the South and the end of the security alliance between Seoul and Washington, which is an extraordinary concession that it is hard to imagine any previous U.S. president agreeing to.

Kim's remarks on the issue came a few hours after US President Donald Trump said he would meet the North Korean leader in May or early June, where he hopes to reach an agreement on denuclearisation with the Pyongyang regime.

The Rodong Sinmun, the official organ of the ruling Workers' Party, filled its front page with KCNA's report, along with pictures of Kim chairing the Politburo meeting.

Speaking at a cabinet meeting on Monday, the U.S. President said that White House officials had been "in touch with North Korea", and that he planned to meet the DPRK leader in May or early June.

They follow media reports that North Korean officials have privately told their U.S. counterparts Kim is ready to discuss denuclearization.

"Kim Jong Un talked about denuclearization with the South Korean Representatives, not just a freeze". Prior to that, Washington had relied mostly on South Korea's assurances of Kim's intentions.

A North Korean diplomat reaffirmed Tuesday that Pyongyang remains committed to denuclearizing the peninsula through progressive and simultaneous actions. The formal meeting might take place by the end of next month that is in May.

North and South Korea are also slated to meet April 27 for a summit of their own.

Mongolia's capital Ulaanbaatar is also considered as one of the possible locations, the report added.
