Masterful Reed answers major question, Top 5 or not

Woods wrapped up the tournament Sunday with his best round, a 3-under-par 69.

Spieth missed a 9-foot par putt on the 18th hole that would have tied the course record shared by Greg Norman and Nick Price.

"I don't ever regret anything I really say", Reed said.

"That is one of my dreams: I want Tiger to come back and play how he has played".

"It's going to be fun", he added.

That includes this year's first round, as Spieth fired a 66 to take a two-shot lead at the end of 18 holes. Spieth finished third at 13-under.

Spieth is going to have to contend with Matt Kuchar, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson and other golfers including Justin Rose, Tiger Woods and Dustin Johnson before this event is completed. His errant ways left him starting a lot sooner than expected Sunday and finishing shortly after the leaders teed off. What more do you have to do? "After feeling like I wasn't making anything all day, to make that on 12 for birdie seemed to give me momentum and that belief that no matter what they threw at me that I can do this and have a chance". When I was overseas, they will cheer for good golf no matter what.

True, another 65 would have won by one.

Fowler came up on the fence with four birdies in the last seven holes, his approach to within seven feet at the last and subsequent successful putt bringing about the potential of a play-off if Reed bogeyed 18.

McIlroy began the final round three shots off the lead and closed to within a shot of eventual victor Patrick Reed after two holes, but faded badly with a closing 74 at Augusta National.

If so, Fowler was not letting on.

"You know, just kind of one of those things that you expect that trying to go win your first major that people are going to make runs and it's not going to be easy", said Reed.

But as a competitor, and as somebody who gets the most out of his game, there's no doubt that Jordan Spieth accomplishes that day in, day out.

"I found it odd that he was doing that talk on Saturday night, putting it up to Patrick Reed about how the pressure was on him, and how he had never won a major before".

Woods is assured of moving back into the top 100 in the world, notable only because he was at No. 1,199 just over four months ago when he returned from yet another long layoff following a fourth back surgery.

The four-times victor on the PGA Tour has now finished in a share of fifth place or better in eight majors, with three of those second-place finishes, though never before had he been as close to the eventual victor as he was on Sunday. It has yet to happen.

If only Fowler hadn't boogied the fifth hole, this would have been a much different outcome.

Rory's missed putt for eagle on the second hole was a bit shocking as he couldn't wait to get there and hit it, especially after he made a great par putt at the first.

"And when I made par on 15, he looked at me and said, 'Don't look at that board". "I really missed it", Woods said. I didn't feel my best. "I just haven't played it well enough at the right times". I still think he's the best golfer in the world in terms on natural talent.

And Fowler would love nothing more than to have his buddies waiting around to congratulate him.
