The contest was ill-tempered at times, though, and England's hopes of shock would have grown slightly again when Cambage was ejected for an unsportsmanlike foul and a technical foul - much to the chagrin of a vocal crowd in the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre.

While men's team lost 1-2 to England, the women's team suffered a 0-6 thrashing.

In the women's match, Sophie Bray (44th, 49th, 56th minutes) scored a hat-trick late in the match while Hollie Pearne-Webb (20th), Laura Unsworth (55th) and skipper Alexandra Danson (57th) got the other goals to settled for the bronze.

The penalty corner conversion was also totally below par, as it has been throughout the tournament. However, it resulted in causing injury to Vandana Kataria as Gurjit Kaur's furious hit rebounded off England custodian's pads and hit Vandana on her forehead. India were given another penalty corner but the England defence was solid. The country consolidated its third position in the overall medal tally with 59 medals - 25 gold, 16 silver and 18 bronze medals.

India captain Manpreet Singh was naturally very upset with the outcome.

British Cycling performance director, Stephen Park, said: "We've been pleased by the performances of British riders on the Gold Coast, which have once again demonstrated the talent, determination and strength in depth that we have within British cycling".

With a good man-to-man marking by England, making successful forays into the striking circle for the Indian forwards was hard to come by.

An Indian infringement gave away the first PC of the match.

After several attempts, India's first breakthrough came in the 26th minute when Mandeep Singh and Lalit Upadhyay worked in tandem.
