This won't be the first Ford Mustang to have a Monster sticker on it, that's for sure. Ford points out the China was a particularly strong foreign market, with 7,125 new registrations making the Mustang the bestselling sporty 2-door among Chinese drivers.

"The world is beginning to look all starry eyed at Mustang", says Erich Merkle, Ford deals investigator.

"We're combining America's favorite sports auto with America's top stock vehicle racing series", said Mark Rushbrook, global director, Ford Performance Motorsports.

Ford supports six organizations and has 13 teams in its NASCAR lineup, including Wood Brothers Racing, Roush Fenway Racing, Team Penske, Stewart-Haas Racing, Front Row Motorsports and Go Fas Racing.

The debut of the Mustang in NASCAR will also coincide with the release of the upcoming Mustang GT500, which we think means there's a solid chance Ford will use that version for the Monster Energy vehicle whole leaving the Xfinity auto as the Mustang GT.

In a landmark day for the future of motorsport in Australia, Ford has announced DJR Team Penske and Tickford Racing will race Ford Mustangs in the 2019 Supercars Championship.

"As we see the street Mustang being sold globally, and leading the sales for sports cars globally, we're doing the same thing with racing the Mustang globally", Rushbrook said.

"Mustang is Ford's halo brand and with its 54th birthday it keeps recording more milestones, but I think having a Mustang Supercar is going to be a very significant one for the brand in this country".

"Mustang always has been about affordable performance, which can be traced to innovations we've made competing in racing, like NASCAR".

The Mustang will be Ford's fourth different Cup Series model since 1972, following the Thunderbird, Taurus and Fusion. "Mustang is a ideal fit for our racing heritage today and tomorrow".

So, Happy Birthday to the mighty Ford Mustang - America's longest-running nameplate and the world's most popular sporty 2-door vehicle. It is powered with updated 5.0 liter powertrain that gives an output of 443 horsepower and 529Nm of torque.

Racing legend and co-owner of DJR Team Penske, Dick Johnson, joked that he "wouldn't be caught" in any other auto, after speculation Ford would sign on.
