Emery, as translated by Jonathan Johnson of ESPN FC, broke the news during Friday's meeting with the media: "I have told the players, (sporting director) Antero (Henrique) & the president (chairman & CEO Nasser Al-Khelaifi) that it is finished".

"His enormous passion for football and his commitment to the job have allowed the club to continue to anchor itself among the elite of French and worldwide football", said Al-Khelaifi in a club statement. "The first six months were hard after the departure of (Zlatan) Ibrahimovic; for the team to adapt to me and for me to adapt to the team".

"It was a hard time", the Spanish coach said Friday at a news conference.

Al-Khelaifi said in a club statement: "Throughout his two seasons at the head of our first team, Unai was a model of commitment and ambition". However, they failed to progress beyond the last-16 this season, as they were defeated comprehensively over two legs by Real Madrid.

Emery was given lots of money to build a team capable of winning this season's Champions League. After making big summer signings like Neymar and Kylian Mbappè, PSG were expected to compete in Europe. The club won the French League Cup both seasons. But Emery sought to assure supporters the Brazil striker will stay. "PSG's project is very solid, and it will continue to grow and add major players".

The 46-year-old's announcement comes amid growing speculation that former Borussia Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel has already agreed to take over at the Parc des Princes.

He's also been linked to Chelsea and, of course, Arsenal.

He replaced Laurent Blanc, who had parted company with PSG after three seasons in charge.
