Man Utd make unwanted history with Brighton defeat

United have all but secured the "best of the rest" honour despite defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion last night.

United looked terrible in the first half, only having one touch in the opposition box and Jose Mourinho was fuming from his side's tragic attempt to pass and play forward.

The Portuguese then levelled the accusations that some of his players lacked the motivation to face Brighton, just weeks ahead of a FA Cup final against Chelsea.

United were beaten 1-0 at the Amex Stadium on Friday night thanks to Pascal Gross' second-half victor - a result that secured Brighton's Premier League survival.

Instead, City can now break United's record winning margin of 18 points from the 1999/2000 season should they win their remaining three games.

Brighton defender Bruno told Sky Sports after the match: "It's nearly four seasons with Chris Hughton".

"But I don't think they had a clear-cut chance and we were good value for the win".

"Our target was to get points to help us finish second and they clearly showed that, for them, it is more important for them to stay in the Premier League than for us to finish second".

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho is reportedly aiming to bolster the club's midfield during the summer amid Michael Carrick's retirement and Marouane Fellaini's uncertain future at Old Trafford. "Why always Lukaku? Why also Lukaku?'", said Jose Mourinho in the aftermath of his side's defeat.

"I thought for some of them the possibility to start the game, to give reason to the ones that during the season there are always critics towards my choices".

"For 10 months I get asked 'why always Lukaku?"

"They are fresher than others that played so many matches in the season, to play against a team that is strong at home and intense". "Even before Christmas, I had doubts about whether they would be able to do it and they deserve to celebrate tonight".

Man United still sit second on the log with 77 points after 36 matches.

Winning promotion last season after years of trying and failing to make the Premier League was a major achievement for Brighton.

Brighton got at the visitors from the opening minute, which they hadn't really done in the previous two encounters, where they sat back.
