Starting on the par-five 10th hole, McIlroy opened with a birdie after a fine chip shot from 40 feet left him with a tap-in.

"The way this golf course is set up and the way it's playing right now, the guys are going to be stacked", Woods said.

"I just don't enjoy the travel out here very much", he said. "I've never made back-to-back eagles in a tournament and I don't think I've done it in practice".

A bad hole can ruin your day. At least he was still playing on the weekend at Quail Hollow, where he had missed the cut his previous two trips.

"It was a little bit disappointing I didn't hit my irons as well as I needed to for this particular week, " Woods said after the Masters.

Tiger Woods waited until his final hole at the Wells Fargo championship to record the first birdie of his round and it got him just inside the cut line.

Harman scored his second career victory at last year's event, posting off a 10-under-par score that was one shot better than Johnson and Pat Perez.

Malnati made two straight birdies and finished with a par that felt like a birdie.

One of the big areas Phil struggled at previous year during the PGA Championship was his short game, as he lost 4.6 strokes to the field around-the-greens.

He is not long or regarded as a pure striker of the golf ball, which is not a great combination at this level.

The result is a slew of players in contention due to a bunched leaderboard and the inability of anyone to break away.

"On slower greens I've always kind of struggled".

"Honestly, the biggest thing that's different for me this week from the last couple of years is I'm just more relaxed", Malnati said. I was just trying to say, from where those two tournaments stood, maybe 50 years ago, the Masters (first played in 1934) wasn't quite at that point.

He was at his best over the last three holes Friday. Exacerbating those numbers is the fact that he hit 26-of-36 greens in regulation, which would suggest a fairly good score. So when they change greens. Didn't birdie any of the par-5s. McIlroy's three bogeys on the front nine killed his momentum, and he carded a 2-over round of 73 to finish in a tie for fifth place.

Peterson was only part of the show on a warm and breezy day at Quail Hollow, site of the PGA Championship last summer. Aaron Wise and Jason Day were tied for second.

Woods has not been back at Quail Hollow in six years.

Peterson almost made it three straight eagles when his approach shot from the rough at the par-four ninth honed in on the pin, but the law of averages caught up with him and the ball did not drop. It's just not for me. Woodland fits the mold of the type of player we are looking for as he ranks 13th in SG: Off-The-Tee, first in Ball Striking, and sixth in Driving Distance.
