This gave Real Madrid a man's advantage and still, the visitors just managed to hold Barcelona for a 2-2 draw, thanks to the hosts' intense pressing in the second half.

Ronaldo played on until halftime, when he was replaced by Marco Asensio. "I think we are the only unbeaten team in Europe in the big leagues and that is something that pushes us".

Real coach Zinedine Zidane told a news conference earlier on Saturday: "We, with respect, won't do it for them because they didn't", referring to Barca's decision not to give their rivals a guard of honour at the Dec 23 Clasico after they won the Club World Cup.

Bale had risked getting sent off for raking his studs against Samuel Umtiti's leg but escaped without a booking on that occasion and Roberto was sent off moments later for hitting Marcelo following an off-the-ball tussle. No team has finished a La Liga season unbeaten since 1931-32, when Real Madrid did so over 18 games.

However with Madrid on course for a third Champions League title things are looking good in Madrid again.

Ronaldo's ankle appeared to be trod on by Barcelona defender Gerard Pique as he scored Madrid's first equaliser in the 15th minute.

Real Madrid controlled the game in the closing stages, but Messi had two quick chances but could not pull Barca ahead against the run of play. They played well and so did we.

"Even though we weren't playing for anything, these matches are different and special, I enjoyed it".

The match grew testy as the first half wore on, with Messi handed a yellow card for a hard tackle on Sergio Ramos and Roberto being shown straight red for violent conduct after throwing a punch at Marcelo before half-time. He led Madrid's push forward and was only stopped when Marc-Andre ter Stegen closed out to block his shot.

That goal took Messi's clasico record to 26 goals.

Alaves routed Malaga 3-0, and Getafe beat Las Palmas 1-0.
