It was another Bennett which ended up taking the honours on the latest stage, with Ireland's Sam Bennett claiming his first victory of the year, and his maiden stage win in a grand tour, seeing off Italian Elia Viviani - victor of the first two stages - in a sprint finish.

Bennett beat Elia Viviani in a sprint finish to win the 159km ride along the Tyrrhenian sea on Friday. Yates' teammate Esteban Chaves is third.

Rewind to last year's Giro d'Italia and Sam Bennett was constantly knocking on the door. "I said to him as soon as I caught him that he could take the stage because if I had enough time I would take the jersey", Yates added.

"I'm really happy with that", said Bennett, who finished third in each of Viviani's wins.

"Anything else now is a bonus".

It would cause some exhausted legs at the tough conclusion, with the final 40 kilometres mostly uphill.

Bennett has stressed the importance of patience at the Giro - making sure he is in form in the final week - but he will also know how crucial it is to not lose time on the upcoming two stages.

The Giro ends in Rome on May 27.

Earlier in the Giro Bennett had lost his favoured lead-out man Rudi Selig to illness so Bennett had to do much of the work on his own. Elia Viviani (Italy, Quick-Step Floors) 3. "I still need to get some time on Tom Dumoulin and some other guys who are better time trialists than me". I was glad I kept my cool and it paid off.

"I feel as if I m getting better and better each day after Israel now, with the bigger picture in mind of getting to the third week as strong as possible and obviously this is the first main objective of the season for me and things are still on track". There were a few close calls, but we made it. When I was in his wheel, at 6 or 7 km to go, he was still looking good. It was Viviani's team mate that took his wheel to try to give him more breathing space and they closed the door there.
