Blasts in 3 Churches : At Least 8 Killed, 35 Injured

Karnavian identified the father as Dita Futrianto and said he was head of the Surabaya cell of Jemaah Anshorut Daulah, an Indonesian militant network affiliated with IS that has been implicated in attacks in Indonesia in the past year.

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attacks, which took place within minutes of each other, however, according to ABC News, police have determined that the attacks were each carried out by members of the same family who had been radicalized by ISIS in Syria before moving to Indonesia.

In the statement the prime minister and Foreign Affairs Minister Julie Bishop also condemned recent attacks at the Indonesian Police Mobile Brigade Headquarters in which six officers lost their lives.

The first attack struck a Sunday Mass at the Santa Maria Roman Catholic Church.

More than 43 other people were wounded in the suicide bombings in Indonesia, said Frans Barung Mangera, a police spokesman.

Meanwhile police are said to have prevented a number of attacks through their surveillance of known radical personnel.

The father, JAD cell leader Dita Priyanto, drove a bomb-laden auto into the Surabaya Centre Pentecostal Church while his sons rode motorcyles into Santa Maria church, where they detonated explosives they were carrying, Karnavian said.

"All were suicide attacks, but the types of bombs were different", Gen Tito told reporters.

Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim nation, has struggled with Islamist terrorism and violence against its Christian minority in the past two decades. The woman and two daughters, aged nine and twelve, were involved in bombing of a second church, and " or two children [aged 16 and 18] drove a motorcycle and carried bomb on ir lap", added Mangera.

"We are angry with these attacks, but we leave it to the authorities to resolve them", said Gormar Gultom, an official with the association.

Forensic proof signifies the bombs have been connected to the attackers' our bodies, Karnavian stated.

Meanwhile, Jakarta police spokesman Setyo Wasisto said police killed four members of JAD in Cianjur, in West Java province, at around 2am yesterday.

Indonesian television showed debris scattered around the entrance of one of the churches and police closing off certain areas as crowds began to gather. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the uprising.

Jakarta has raised the alert status to the "highest alert status until further notice", Jakarta Police chief Insp.

"I'm particularly close to the dear people of Indonesia, especially to the Christian community of the city of Surabaya strongly hit by the grave attacks on places of worship", the pope said after his weekly Sunday Regina Coeli prayer.

The police believe that JAD is group that is following attack, an organization that is estimated to have attracted hundreds of supporters of Islamic State in Indonesia.

There are some 30 million Christians in Indonesia, while the majority of the country's population of 260 million are Muslim.
