Maharashtra ATS arrests man planning terror attacks

Mumbai: A 32-year-old man, who was planning to assassinate some important personalities, has been arrested by Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorism Squad from the city's western suburbs, Anti-Terrorism Squad officials said Sunday. A team of Juhu ATS and the Mumbai police arrested Mirza following credible information from the Kolkata STF.

"In Karachi, he was trained at a terror camp where he was shown how to handle firearms. make explosives and carry out suicide missions", the officer said. An ATS officer said, "It has been learned that the man had travelled to Pakistan via Sharjah after his stay in Dubai". When contacted, Maharashtra ATS chief Additional Director General Atulchandra Kulkarni confirmed that the accused had been arrested from the city. Sources say Mirza was ordered to plan an attack in Mumbai. He had also received advanced training in making bombs and triggering blasts. He was called by his handler to Sharjah.

According to a senior officer, Mirza is an associate of wanted terrorist Amir Reza Khan, co-founder of Indian Mujahideen.

The official said the arrested man's interrogation had revealed that he was part of a terror group that planned to carry out attacks on "public utilities" and crowded places. According to a tweet by news agency ANI, the man was planning a terror attack in the state and other parts of the country.

The man was presented before a local court, which has sent him to the ATS custody till May 21.

"We will question him on the identities of those who met him and the ISI contact who allegedly shadowed him to the terror camps", added an ATS source.
