Buck Farmer relieved him, and both those runners came home on groundouts to make it 4-3.

Cano tried to get out of the way of an inside 88-mph fastball from Detroit Tigers starter Blaine Hardy, a graduate of Edmonds-Woodway High School, when the pitch hit off of the back of Cano's hand.

Tigers right fielder Niko Goodrum, playing for an injured Nicholas Castellanos, led off the fifth inning with a solo home run.

The Mariners activated right-hander Dan Altavilla from the 10-day disabled list before the second game.

Detroit's pitchers have given up 4.6 runs per game overall in 2018 as a unit.

Mariners: Cano did have a brief DL stint previous year because of a quad issue, but he still played 150 games and hit 23 homers.

Tigers reliever Joe Jimenez had a chance to escape the eighth inning, but he couldn't handle the throw from first baseman John Hicks while covering the bag at first on a grounder from speedy Mariners lead-off man Dee Gordon. Jean Segura followed with a two-run single. In his career, he has made 167 appearances (all out of the pen) and he has gone 9-4 with a 3.60 ERA and a 1.45 ERA in those games, including 6-1 with a 3.19 ERA in 87 pen appearances here at home.

Shane Greene pitched a 1-2-3 top of the ninth inning to earn the win.

The Mariners fell to 22-17, but of more immediate concern was Cano, their ironman-like second baseman who has played more games in the major leagues since his debut with the Yankees in 2005 than any other player.

The Mariners announced that Cano has a fractured fifth metacarpal.

Castellanos was hit by a pitch in the first inning of the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, and he left soon after that.

Seattle has posted 24.7 Runs + Hits + Errors per game over its last 10 outings and 27.4 over its last five.
