With the Premier League season now over, Burnley have given the green light for Arfield to be announced as the first signing of the Steven Gerrard era. Arfield had effectively been recruited by director of football Mark Allen but Gerrard had given the deal his approval following his appointment.

Arfield revealed interest from Rangers first materialised several months ago.

Scott Arfield feels he left Scotland a "wee boy" and returns a "natural leader" who is ready to meet the expectations of playing for Rangers.

'It is just an absolute dream, ' Arfield said.

'He was my hero.

'Getting that different aspect of off-the-field advice now as well as the on-the-field experience can only enhance you as a player and a person.' He added.

Former England captain Gerrard, who formally takes charge of Rangers on June 1, has been tasked with restoring the club to the top of Scottish football and he is optimistic he can do so.

Steven Gerrard's first signing of his managerial career is from the Premier League.

"He is a talented and competitive midfielder who has competed at a high level in the English Premiership and internationally for Canada", the 37-year-old said.

"I am delighted to have added Scott Arfield to the squad for next season".

"It's pleasing also that we have been able to start our rebuilding process so quickly after the end of the season".

However, this season has seen him turn out only 18 times, with injury and Burnley's incredible form keeping him out of the starting line-up.
