Reported STDs Reach Record High in California

Here are the numbers: from 2013 to 2017, the rate of Chlamydia cases per 10,000 people has increased from 417 to 534, Gonorrhea from 64 to 136, and Early Syphilis from not even 1 to 32.

Chlamydia and gonorrhea were the most rampant among people under 30, with rates of chlamydia highest among young women.

The internet has indeed helped many people find their partners online, but it has also played a significant role in increasing the number of sexually transmitted disease (STD) cases among couples in California in the year 2017, said the health officials on Monday. That is a 45 percent increase from 2012.

The most concerning finding on this report was in 2017- when there were 30 stillbirths due to syphilis.

The health department's director, Dr. Karen Smith, urged sexually active people to use condoms and get tested regularly. Chlamydia rates among girls and women were 60 percent higher than boys and men.

In the last few years, Kern County has seen sexually transmitted disease rates soar, putting Kern's STD rates among the highest in the state. "And for gay men and other men who have sex with men and trans persons, they should have STD screening every three months", said SF Department of Public Health's Dr. Susan Philip.

Common among young people aged 15-24, gonorrhea can cause infections in the genitals, rectum, and throat.

In California, 75,450 gonorrhea cases were reported in 2017, marking it the highest number since 1988.

Left untreated, chlamydia and gonorrhea can lead to infertility and ectopic pregnancy, while syphilis can lead to blindness or even be fatal.

Different stages of syphilis (primary, secondary, latent, and tertiary) have different symptoms, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states.

'We've known how to control syphilis since early 1900s.

Officials blame lack of STD awareness, decreasing number of clinics and less frequent condom usage for the rates, the L.A. Times reported.

Kern County has the second highest number of babies born with congenital syphilis, according to the data. Syphilis can cause permanent loss of vision, hearing and other neurologic problems. According to health officials, STDs are largely curable and can be easily prevented by taking measures to practice safe sex.
