State prosecutors said the children were subjected to waterboarding, shot with crossbows and had scalding water poured on them.

The allegations have been a part of prosecutors' try to have the kids's mom Ina Rogers' bail elevated after she was charged with 9 counts of felony youngster abuse on Wednesday. When she was later asked why all 10 children slept in a single room while the other bedrooms were used as the parents' quarters, a "meditation room" and a playroom, Rogers replied that the children liked it that way.

Both Rogers and Allen have denied the accusations against them.

New York Daily News reports that Rogers convinced her children not to report the abuse because she wanted to protect Allen, and that "Instead of taking care of them she has abused them, if not assisting her husband in torture".

When police searched the Northern California home of Ina Rogers and Jonathan Allen and their 10 children, they said they found disgusting conditions.

Allen was charged Monday with nine counts of felony child abuse as well as seven counts of torture. He is being held on $5.2 million bail. The judge denied reducing it. "The children appeared to be skittish and spoke with speech impediments", Ms Juarez wrote.

Juarez wrote that Rogers dissuaded the children from reporting their injuries, which include broken arms, in order to protect Allen. She did not enter a plea at a court appearance this week.

It's still unclear whether any California government agencies had an opportunity to intervene in the years authorities claim the children were abused inside their home in suburban Fairfield, about 46 miles northeast of San Francisco.

Solano County court records show that Allen was charged with four felonies in 2011, including corporal injury, assault with a firearm and criminal threats in a case involving his wife, identified by her initials, I.R. He pleaded no contest to corporal injury and was sentenced to 180 days in jail and three years of probation.

Rogers, 31, told reporters that she had one prior interaction with child welfare officials when her mother "had mentioned something" that prompted a home visit.

In an emotional and sometimes rambling interview, Allen said the allegations that he sadistically tortured his children were false and he believes the children were "manipulated" by "brainwashed" police.

Solano County's Child Welfare Services department officials did not immediately provide information on details about the visit or other interactions they may have had with members of the household.

"I want to tell them that I love them". The state has no record of any of the children attending public school. Officers observed disgusting living conditions inside the home including human and animal feces strewn about and rotting food. Police removed the children and arrested Rogers on suspicion of neglect. She pleaded not guilty on Wednesday and her bail was set at $495,000.

Stories about alleged abuse dating back years came out gradually in interviews with the children over the past six weeks, authorities said.

"He would take the baby and slap it in the face and put duct tape on the baby's mouth to make it shut up", Wanda Rogers said. Her court-appointed attorney, Barry Newman, declined to comment.
