"I had to do this for everyone".

Wenger has close ties with Real Madrid President Florentino Perez and confirmed that he had rejected tempting offers to take over at the Spanish giants on several occasions.

Here is a Zidane fan who is still in disbelief of what he has just seen/heard...

Real President Florentino Pérez admitted his surprise at Zidane's decision just five days after their historic Champions League success. They have always respected what I've done, even when I wasn't playing well. "But everything changes and that's why I've taken the decision to leave". If I don't think that we can keep winning then it's time.

It appears as if Zidane wanted to move on from the club on a high.

The goal, which is rated as one of the best final goals ever, was emulated by Gareth Bale's acrobatic goal in Saturday's Champions League final, where Madrid sank Liverpool 3-1 in Kiev. If I have the feeling that I'm not going to win, I'm going to make a change. But I feel it's time. But I know it was his final decision. There was no backward step.

Not even the great Barcelona team constructed by Pep Guardiola could successfully defend the European Cup, yet Zidane won it in three successive campaigns.

Zidane said, "I have decided not to be Real Madrid coach next season. It's my decision, it could be wrong". As one of the most promising young managers in the world, it's only natural that Madrid would be interested, but can the prise him from White Hart Lane?

"I remember the first time I went to his house and asked him to coach Real Madrid and he was absolutely convinced he could win things".

The 45-year-old Zidane, who was coach for two and half seasons, said he felt it was the right moment - for him and for the team - to make the move.

According to the BBC, Zidane expressed his "love" for Real before explaining the rationale behind his resignation.
