The Israeli military said in its statement: "The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) constantly works to draw operational lessons and reduce the number of casualties in the area of the Gaza Strip security fence".

The renewed rocket fire on Saturday and Sunday shattered an unofficial truce agreed upon by Israel and Gazan militant factions last week following the firing of over 100 rockets into Israel in three separate attacks - the largest single projectile barrage from the Palestinian enclave since the Gaza 2014 war.

Israeli troops shot dead a Palestinian who tried to ram a tractor into soldiers and civilians in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, the Israeli military said. Israel killed Palestinian medic Razan al-Najjar while she was treating injured protesters today. She joined the Israeli Defense Force (IDF) as a soldier specializing in education, but later decided she was meant for the field.

After her death, a volunteer ambulance worker, Izzat Shatat, told the Associated Press that he and Najjar were planning to announce their engagement at the end of Ramadaan. She was one of the only female medics responding to medical emergencies during the protests organised by Hamas, the militant group that controls Gaza. Thousands of Palestinians took part in what the Israeli military described as violent riots at five locations along the security fence, burning tires and throwing stones.

Smoke rises following an Israeli strikes on Gaza City, early Wednesday, May 30, 2018. Israel has been criticised by human rights groups, which say it has used excessive force against the mostly unarmed protesters.
